Let us introduce you to the five most beautiful lakes in South Tyrol. Don't miss out on these hidden gems when planning your next holiday in the Alps.

1. LAGO DI BRAIES

Nestled amidst the Prags Dolomites, Lake Braies is a true gem. It lies at almost 1,500 metres above sea level in the beautiful Valle di Braies, a side of the Pusteria Valley. Its emerald waters glisten in the sunlight, surrounded by towering peaks that make you feel like you've stepped into a picture postcard. To preserve the pristine environment of the UNESCO World Heritage Fanes-Senes-Braies Natural Park and address traffic congestion, visitor numbers have been restricted. Online booking for the Braies Lake shuttle service is available; if all seats are taken, access to the valley and the lake by bus is not permitted.
The lake is perfect for taking a fun trip in a rowing boat, which you'll remember for a lifetime, and for taking in the scenic walks nearby, including the Prato Piazza Plateau, where you can immerse yourself in Alpine beauty.
If you love alpine scenery, glistening water and mountain tranquillity, Lake Braies will exceed your expectations.

2. LAGO DI CAREZZA

Often called the "Rainbow Lake", Lago di Carezza is an enchanting jewel hidden in the Dolomites. The mirror-like surface of this small but stunning alpine lake wonderfully reflects the surrounding Latemar mountain range. What makes Lago di Carezza so special is the incredible play of colours in its waters. On clear days, the lake reflects greens and blues, creating a one-of-a-kind sight. It's an almost otherworldly place, with its calm waters and the peaks of the Dolomites towering above.
This natural masterpiece is perfect all year round: in the summer, be sure to take a relaxing stroll around the lake to enjoy the stunning views from all sides. In winter, the 'Dolomite Fairy Tale Lake' becomes a frozen wonderland, covered in a soft, snowy blanket. Lago di Carezza is a site where the beauty of nature genuinely shines, and it's ideal for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

3. LAGO DI RESIA

Lago di Resia is a lake steeped in history and natural beauty. Its creation dates back to 1950, when a large dam was built that submerged the alpine village of Curon Venosta, rebuilt higher up.
All that remains of the old town today is the bell tower of the ancient Romanesque church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, which rises above the waters of the lake and is one of the most evocative and photographed spots in the region, accessible on foot in winter when the lake freezes over. Legend has it that on some days you can hear the ringing of the bells, even though they were removed during the construction of the dam.
Visitors come from all around to see this hauntingly gorgeous sight. Aside from its historical significance, Lago di Resia provides chances for water sports enthusiasts, particularly kite surfers and windsurfers drawn to the clear and windy weather. The surrounding landscape consists of beautiful greenery and steep mountains, making it an ideal location for trekking and exploring.
Lago di Resia is a must-see for anyone interested in history, water sports, or simply a fascinating natural setting.

4. LAGO DI CALDARO

Situated among the vineyards of South Tyrol, Lago di Caldaro is a lake with many charms. It has the reputation of being one of the warmest lakes in the Alps, making it an inviting spot for swimmers and sunbathers. The water's pleasant temperature, especially in the summer months, which can arrive at temperatures of 28 degrees, provides a refreshing contrast to the surrounding vineyards. Speaking of which, Lago di Caldaro is surrounded by grapevines and wineries, offering the opportunity to sample South Tyrol's world-renowned wines. Wine tasting and tours are popular activities in the region, as well as incredible scenic hikes and strolls. For the more adventurous, there are many hiking and cycling trails in the area. The well-known Lake Caldaro Triathlon is held at the lake every spring, bringing here many sport enthusiasts.
Lago di Caldaro offers a lovely blend of environment and culture, whether you want to rest by the lake, tour the vineyards, or go on an outdoor adventure.

5. LAGO DI LANDRO

Lago di Landro, commonly known as Dürrensee, is a peaceful Alpine lake tucked away in the Dolomites. It provides a tranquil refuge from the rush and bustle of daily life, surrounded by lush forests and cliffs. What distinguishes this lake is its sense of quiet and tranquillity. It's ideal for nature enthusiasts and those seeking seclusion in the middle of outstanding natural splendour.
At the lake, you can admire the steep rock formations of the Dolomites, in the area of the Sexten Dolomites Nature Park. In winter, the lake is frozen for many months, showing an incredible natural landscape. It is habitually used for a cross-country skiing loop that forms an interesting variant of the Dobbiaco-Cortina cycle track.
Lago di Landro's tranquil waters are ideal for a slow paddle, dives and peaceful swims and the surrounding area has hiking trails that wind through the forests and provide panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings.
The nearby Dürrenstein Hütte, a picturesque mountain cabin, welcomes you and serves South Tyrolean cuisine. Lago di Landro guarantees a quiet alpine experience, whether you're seeking a peaceful vacation or an opportunity to reconnect with nature.
